Must Read

I just finished reading Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. This book was excellent! I loved it. I am not sure if it is a series or not. It ended where it could go either way. But, I highly recommend reading this one. It is written in multiple POV, an idea I tossed around for my own novel but didn't feel that I could pull off. Maggie did it beautifully. You get to see first hand each of the two main characters inner workings. I hate to keep using the same adjective, but it really is a beautiful story!

Here is what Amazon.com has as the book description:
For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf--her wolf--is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human . . . until the cold makes him shift back again.
Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human--or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

I also recently finished Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. Loved it! If you havent already read The Hunger Games, this is also a must read.
On a side note, I have just returned from vacation, and not having internet. I am hoping to update my blog soon, so keep an eye out...of course "soon" could mean within the next month. ;)
I spent my week vacation typing my longhand novel notes into my new laptop! I am nowhere near done, but I put a little dent in it anyway.
What books have you read lately that made you want to pass copies out to all your friends?

  1. I have this, but have not read it yet. I believe it is a series. I have also thought of and not completely ruled out using two POVs for my book as well. I'm gonna be writing lots this week so we'll see how it goes. I also keep reverting back to first person so I'm still contemplating that as well. As I write more, I'll decide more. Well, I'm going to put Were books on hold for now and am focusing on vampire books for a post I'm going to be doing. Plus some writing so busy week! Congrats on getting your writing and reading done this week, that's awesome! I got a bit of reading and writing done over the weekend. Have a good week!

  2. Yay for you getting some writing done too! I hope to be updating my blog w/the mailbox thing for all the fabulous books I got last week! :)
Finally got my wifi! It's fabulous. So excited. I have all sorts of ideas popping in my head from time to time, so I have multiple stories being written. It's craziness, but I've got to get it all down on paper. I will work out the details later. I am sure I will post about this soon. Still working on my primary novel idea, but am also making plans to do rough drafts of the next in my other kid's series I let you start reading (MM). Hoping to get my uncle to brainstorm on the illustrations when he visits in Nov.
I started out in first person POV and still occasionally catch myself writing that way for certain parts. I decided against it earlier because I really wanted to convey the inner workings of some of the other important characters and felt I couldnt do that thru the main characters POV. So I changed to third person. But I have two other ideas I am working on that are most definitly going to be first person. It just feels right that way. So, I guess the moral of my story is to just write and go w/what your gut tells you is right. If it feels right in multiple, do it that way if you think you can pull it off. Maggie did it and her book turned out amazing! And if it doesnt work, you can always change it or tweak it later. The important thing is WRITING! Get it out on paper (or computer) and then worry about the little details when you are doing revisions.

  3. Just in case anyone happens to read this: I read on Maggie's website today that Shiver is the first in a trilogy. The second books, Linger, is due out next Fall! AND - apparently a subsidiary of Warner Bros has purchased the movie rights to Shiver! How awesome that would be if this is made into a movie!

  4. Hi, first, yes I saw the movie info on FB, Maggie is one of my FB friends along with a handful of other authors that I follow on FB. I like to hear what they are up to and what writing advice they have to offer. Some post links to the blog posts, etc. Anyway, today (9/30 still for me) she posted this AM that she could finally say that they picked up the rights to it. That has to be an awesome feeling to get your book turned into a movie. I thought, wow, that's how you know you wrote a great book. I mean I'm sure there are lots of great books that aren't movies, but that has got to mean a lot!!!

As for the writing stuff, it sounds like you have a lot of awesome projects going. It sounds fun! Right now I have several main project ideas including my first novel that I'm currently working on. I am excited to be writing more. And that you are writing more too. It's so fun to talk about our writing together!!! ;-) I'm soooo glad your wifi came in. Isn't it cool! I bet you are loving the laptop too. Very cool. They really do come in handy. I already want a new one, lol. As for POV, I think you are write, just go with what feels right and work it out in the details later. When I start typing my notes I will try to get it in the right voice so to speak. I will probably be adding more dialogue later as I seem to be writing a lot of thoughts and scenes through one POV. Wow, good luck on the children's series. The first was I read was really good! I can't wait to hear about or read the others. I hope you and your uncle can work out the illustrations too. It's gonna be great! Well, congrats again on all of your hard work. It is paying off!
